Coinciding with the US premiere of the brand new anime season of FLCL: Progressive, legendary Japanese alternative rock trio The Pillows undertake their first stateside shows in eight years. Whilst the outfit have honed their sound since 1989, they came to international attention in the year 2000 when their first three albums provided the soundtrack to the sci-fi coming-of-age anime series FLCL (pronounced Fooly Cooly in English).
Whilst their contemporaries were infatuated with Seattle's Sub Pop lineage and its resulting grunge and punk evolution at the time of their forming, The Pillows forged their own niche in the band scene of their home country with poetic lyrics and unabashedly pop melodies inspired by a range of influences from the 60s pop of The Beatles and their ilk, to the broody shoe-gaze-tinged sound of The Smiths in the 80s.
