Silk Road Ensemble : Heroes Take Their Stands at Newmark Theatre

Why see Silk Road Ensemble : Heroes Take Their Stands?

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS WITH A WORLD PREMIERE

Much like its historical namesake, The Silk Road organisation promotes the open exchange of musical knowledge and collaboration, all under the helm of artistic director and founder Yo Yo Ma, the world-renowned cellist. The Silk Road Ensemble, an ever-changing collective of rotating musicians, storytellers and visual artists that blend their cultures to create exciting new works.

This evening of celebration brings together an exciting new work from Ahmad Sadri, an Iranian folklorist who has created a piece that explore the struggles of five iconic heroes from Dr Martin Luther King to Elektra, of Greek mythology, living in the borderlands between opposing cultures and conflicting values.

This five-part blends performance dance, a cultural blend of Silk Road music, puppetry, video and recorded readings to create a journey of discovery through contrasting cultures and landscapes.

"Heroes take their stand" could have been a 5 star, but...

Silk Road Ensemble are brilliant and creative musicians. Everything was wonderful except. 1. No African American musician or African American singer in the "Moderato 400" piece/section, the piece was great but this missing element disappointing. 2. No live "Ney" player in the animated, almost karaoke like, section to close the 5 pieces of the evening. It was like no one really quite knew what to do in this section of the restrictions of playing with the background track of the animation of "Prince of Sorrows", i heard a few others also wondering where was this ney player? it was dominant and pre-recorded, something musicians of this calibre do not need at all! A wonderful creative evening of some of the finest musicians of many cultures just the same. The other three pieces, Elektra, June Snow, and Arjuna, were also masterful and brilliant! ... Read more
